Heartland Park Topeka Announces Road Course Repaving Contractor

Topeka, KS (October 11, 2016) – Officials with the New Heartland Park Topeka announce the selection of Sunflower Paving, Inc. of Lawrence, KS as the firm contracted to handle a complete repaving of the facility’s 2.5-mile, 14-turn championship-caliber road course. This extensive project is already underway and is expected to be completed before the end of October.

“The road course surface had numerous issues that prevented us from opening the track in 2016,” explains Jeff Lacina, Director of Road Course Operations for the New Heartland Park Topeka. “Over the course of the summer, we explored numerous repair options and techniques, consulted with a number of resources, but in the end, the ownership group felt the best long-term solution is to completely repave all four of the road course configurations, including the pit road entrance and exit. The team at Sunflower Paving has been very helpful throughout the planning process and we are confident in their ability to put down a surface that local, regional and national racers will really enjoy racing on.”

Sunflower paving is a full service paving company providing commercial concrete and asphalt paving for a wide range of customers throughout eastern and central Kansas. Specializing in municipal and private sector contracts, Sunflower has been involved with other paving projects at Heartland Park Topeka.

“We are very excited to be working with the team at the New Heartland Park Topeka,” says Jeff Engroff, president of Sunflower Paving. “We worked with HPT staff all summer in examining every possible repair and resurfacing option. The road course surface itself had deteriorated significantly since the last repave and reconfiguration. The new surface and improved drainage will be a huge improvement over the existing surface.”

Consulting engineers for the repaving project are Kimbel Stokes with Speedway Pavement Inc., and Wayne McMurtry, who combined have nearly 70 years of motorsports asphalt experience. The complete road course resurfacing project involves addressing drainage issues, milling and removing the existing surface and replacing it with three inches of high tech asphalt and polymers.

According to Lacina, the three main objectives for the new asphalt surface is to be easy on racers’ tires, stand up to Kansas’ weather conditions and provide acceptable wet-weather traction. The project began on October 11 and will be completed as weather and paving conditions allow so that the asphalt can fully cure over the winter months and be ready for action in March of 2017.

Full Road Course Season in 2017
With the resurfacing project approved and underway, the track is now accepting event date applications for a full season of driving, riding and racing events for 2017. “Given the historical weather data for Topeka, we are looking at a road course season that starts in mid-March and runs through the end of October,” explains Lacina.

Groups and sanctioning bodies interested in securing road course dates for 2017 are asked to visit www.heartlandpark.com/roadcourse/info and download the 2017 Date Request Form and return it to the track for scheduling.

“We know the new surface will make Heartland Park Topeka the ‘must drive’ track and will be very popular with our road course racers, drivers and riders,” says Lacina. “Our goal is to be able to host a wide variety of wheel-to-wheel racing and high-performance driving events and will do our best to schedule them around our customers’ requested dates.”
